Loneliness on the road.
Our Under the Bonnet report revealed that a UK van driver spends an average of five hours a day by themselves - or 25 hours a week. This is harming their mental wellbeing, including feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Over six in 10 (65%) van drivers in the UK have lived with anxiety or depression, and 42% say feeling lonely in their van is a regular thing.
Research finds team sports boost productivity.
According to our Under The Bonnet research business owners encourage team sport with 50% saying their staff were more productive. Fewer sick days, stronger teams, and better morale. Team sport continues to prove its value in the workplace.
To continue supporting the business and its van drivers, Mercedes-Benz Vans has turned last years’ Vantasy Football Tournament into an annual event at England’s training ground, St George’s Park.
Eight teams were selected to take part in the competition, each representing businesses that understand the value of investing in their people. The tournament offered more than just a shot at winning the Vantasy Football Trophy, it demonstrated how sport can build healthier, happier and more connected teams.

Top tips from mental health charity, MenWalkTalk.
Mercedes-Benz Vans worked with Matt Pollard, CEO of MenWalkTalk to create five top tips on what van drivers can do to improve/support their mental wellbeing while working.
The charity encourages communities to get together and enjoy physical activity outdoors as a way of offering support to those suffering from mental health. There are now nearly 20 different locations across the UK where walks take place at least once a week.
Drive to Thrive: Top 5 Tips for Van Drivers' Mental Wellbeing from Matt Pollard, CEO of MenWalkTalk.
1. When in Doubt, Walk it Out
The realities of being a van driver often mean spending large periods alone at the wheel. If you're feeling low and battling negative thoughts, take a break from the cab and step into nature. Research from the Mental Health Foundation proves that spending time outdoors can boost mental wellbeing and participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress Whether it's a short stroll during your break or a weekend sports match, let the outdoors be your companion to clear your mind.
2. Share the Load, Lighten the Road
Speak to someone about your feelings and challenges, this could be your colleague who’s in the same boat, friend, loved one or a stranger. Remember, sharing your struggles can lead to understanding and support. If you need extra support, check if your employer offers an Employee Assistance Programme or Mental Health First Aid team.
3. Stay Connected on the Go
Humans thrive on connection. Keep in touch with loved ones. If you want to meet new friends, join local walking groups or sports and social clubs. Connect with fellow van drivers and form a chat group - doing this can provide a sense of community and understanding, boosting your mental wellbeing one conversation at a time.
4. Rest Up for the Road Ahead
We know van drivers’ routines can be impacted by shift work but quality sleep is your fuel. Prioritise a regular sleep routine where you can and aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep off shift. Better sleep means better concentration, mood, and overall wellbeing.
5. Practice Mindfulness
Being fully present in the moment can enhance your awareness and decision-making, helping you navigate challenges more effectively. Take a moment where possible to 'notice' your surroundings—find a comfortable spot, whether that’s sitting or lying down and focus your mind on what's happening around you. Engage your senses to observe the sights, sounds, and scents present in the moment.
Other practices that support mindfulness and manage stress include simple breathing exercises like the 3-4-5 technique.
The charity also encourages drivers to look at the following resources if they are suffering from poor
mental health or isolation while on the road:
● The Mindset Mentor podcast is an excellent resource for those seeking increased motivation, guidance, and concentration in their lives. It tackles mental health by blending neurology, neurobiology, psychology, early childhood development, and cognitive behavioural therapy.

and coping with mental health challenges.
