Drivetrain technologies

Which engine or drivetrain technology is right for you?

Short trips, suburban commuting, regular long-distance journeys or a combination of all three. Your car life is unique.

Our broad portfolio of advanced drivetrains is engineered to ensure you find the one that is right for you, from all-electric drives that pair high-range, zero-tailpipe-emission efficiency with supreme performance, to hybrid technologies that offer an added dimension of flexibility.

Our all-electric drivetrains

Discover the technology of all-electric propulsion and drivetrains.

Mercedes-Benz innovations are ensuring the electric transformation fits your lifestyle. From entry-level coupé to luxury SUV, and from off-road manoeuvrability to breathtaking on-road performance, our technology has you covered. Efficient, reliable and fun to drive, all our drives offer class-leading range and seamless charging - conveniently at home or super-fast on the road.

Our growing range of efficient all-electric drivetrains is based on a highly modular set of advanced components, such as an intelligent charging system. Electric drive units deliver smooth performance by delivering instant torque and effortless responsiveness, without adding to fuel consumption. The latest battery technologies are developed with Mercedes-Benz DNA. Our charging systems ensure rapid top-ups and long battery life. And you can manage it all via your intelligent and intuitive Mercedes-Benz user interface.

Our off-road icon enters the electric era with the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. Every bit as tough as its conventionally powered sibling, its drivetrain features four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels. This innovative concept enables unique and useful functions for unmatched manoeuvrability on demanding terrain - just as a G-Class should.

* It is not permissible to use G-TURN and G-STEERING on any public roads and such use is in no way authorised, promoted or condoned. Use G-TURN and G-STEERING only on loose or soft surfaces, e.g. gravel or snow, with relevant land permission.

** The intelligent off-road crawl function is an aid only. The driver is responsible at all times for maintaining a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front or from any obstacles.

Axial-flux motor: a breathtaking electric performance for road and track.

The Mercedes-Benz toolkit of advanced technologies for all-electric drive includes the innovative axial-flux motor.

Currently undergoing testing in the forthcoming all-electric coupé and SUV from Mercedes-AMG, it's perfect for high-performance electric vehicles. It offers a significantly higher power density from a considerably smaller package, weighing just one third as much as a current radial motor with the same output.

Drivetrain technologies FAQs.

A mild hybrid cannot drive on electricity alone and uses a small battery alongside a conventional petrol or diesel engine to improve performance and acceleration, without the need to be plugged in.

A plug-in hybrid combines a combustion engine with electric power. Electric-only driving is possible but this drivetrain offers the switch to hybrid or full combustion for longer journeys.

No, you do not need to plug in a mild hybrid instead it is powered by a battery pack which is charged by the engine and regenerative braking. A mild hybrid does not work on electric power alone.

Whereas combustion vehicles with 4MATIC use mechanical components to distribute power from the engine to all four wheels, electric vehicles use independent electric motors on both the front and rear axles for torque distribution.
