End-of-Life car, battery and packaging recycling

Car scrapping & end-of-life recycling.

To make car recycling and scrapping as easy as possible and comply with manufacturers obligation under the End of Life Vehicle directive, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Autogreen Ltd in the UK to provide an approved network of certified Authorised Treatment car scrapping, recycling and dismantling facilities (ATFs) for end-0f-life cars. They will take care of the environmentally friendly scrapping and recycling of your car once it has reached the end of its life, ensuring that it is recycled to 95%[*].


* Autogreen's network of ATF's and take-back points will take all registered Mercedes-Benz vehicles. These sites will not charge for the disposal of these vehicles if the vehicle is complete, i.e. the vehicle must include its essential component parts, including but not limited to its engine, coachworks/chassis, transmission drive, catalytic converter, wheels, and must not contain waste. As part of Autogreen’s Rewarding Recycling Programme they may even be able to provide you with a value for your vehicle’s recycled parts and metals.

Car scrapping & end-of-life recycling.

To learn where you can scrap or recycle your Mercedes-Benz car, visit www.rewardingrecycling.co.uk or call 0800 542 2002. You can drop it off to any local participating dealer, Network approved ATF, or opt for home collection. If you want to scrap or recycle your Mercedes-Benz car but want to keep the registration plate of your vehicle, you can apply to keep it. When you take your car to the ATF, make sure you give them your vehicle log book or V5C and keep the yellow V5C/3 slip, you will also be required to provide photographic documents to prove your identity. Once your car has reached an ATF to be recycled, make sure you tell the DVLA otherwise you can be fined £1,000. You can notify the DVLA that you have surrendered your vehicle using the document reference number on the V5c through their online service at https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle.

The value of your car is calculated based on daily updated metal and used car market prices, its weight, and your geographical location. Following the collection or drop off of your car to the nominated facility you can be paid in two different ways, either by Faster Payment or by BACS bank transfer. When you surrender your car you will be given a unique PIN number to transfer the money directly into your account. Shortly after, you will receive an electronic copy of the Certificate of Destruction, unless this is provided at the point of drop off.

After handing over your end-of-life car and the registration documents you will be given a DVLA Certificate of Destruction (COD), this document confirms you are no longer liable for the car and it has been disposed of properly. The DVLA Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is a document issued by a registered Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), through an electronic link directly to the DVLA. Battery recycling.
The landfilling and incineration of batteries have been banned in the UK since 2010 and all UK battery producers are legally required to be registered with the Government as part of an EU-wide initiative to increase the collection and recycling of car batteries, industrial and portable batteries.


Car batteries.

As a producer of automotive batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd. are obliged to collect, free of charge and within a reasonable time, waste automotive batteries for treatment and recycling from final holders e.g. garages, scrap yards, end-of-life vehicle Authorised Treatment Facilities, Civic Amenity Sites, etc. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new automotive batteries on the market.
 

If you require us to take back any automotive batteries, please contact us via your chosen Mercedes-Benz Showroom. We will agree the necessary arrangements for the collection, proper treatment and recycling of the waste automotive batteries.

 

Portable batteries.

Portable batteries are those such as sealed batteries that can easily be carried around and are often found in items such as car remotes, alarm controls, torches, mobile phones, MP3 players and calculators. These portable batteries can be recycled by taking them to your nearest Mercedes-Benz Showroom, where they will be collected. Other collection points are available at places such as large supermarkets and shops, DIY stores as well as civic amenity sites. Electric & hybrid car batteries.

As of the 1st January 2010, any businesses that place industrial batteries, used in hybrid or electric cars, into the UK market have an obligation to arrange for the treatment and recycling of these batteries. As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd. produce Lithium-ion batteries. We are obliged to take back free of charge, waste industrial batteries supplied to an end user for treatment and recycling. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new industrial batteries on the market.

Information on returning waste oil according to the Waste Oil Ordinance (AltölV)

The purchaser is obliged to ensure that the used oil and the containers are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. To make this possible, we will of course take back your used oil free-of-charge to the amount you purchased from us. The used oil can either be returned to the address of our dispatch warehouse (dispatch address, see invoice) or to a Mercedes-Benz branch. Any transport costs incurred shall be borne by the buyer. When shipping, please note that waste oil is a hazardous material. When returning used oil requires, it is necessary to present the invoice or delivery note. You can, of course, also return your used oil filters and other oil-containing waste produced during oil changes, in the quantity purchased from us, to the address of our dispatch warehouse (dispatch address, see invoice) on presentation of the invoice or delivery note. Here, too, the transport costs are at your expense.
