How to charge an electric car at home

You can charge your all-electric Mercedes-Benz car at home via a dedicated electric car home charger. Our charging partners offer domestic wallbox solutions, providing you with your own home charging station.

Having access to your own wallbox will allow charging to suit your lifestyle, plus smart charging can save you money by enabling off-peak charging. Home car charging points can be tethered chargers with a fixed cable, which is convenient and faster to connect, whereas untethered ones allow you to use the cable provided with your Mercedes-Benz. These can have a neater appearance and are more flexible, as you can use any compatible cable.

Installing your home car charging point

If you are looking to purchase a domestic wallbox from one of our partners, you can expect to complete a short survey helping them to understand your home charging requirements. This will include where you park, possible locations for your charging unit, information on your WIFI and power supply, plus the type of charger you’re interested in.

This information will help them determine the most suitable location for your home car charging point and any other installation requirements. Please note that some installations may not be possible depending on your building type.

Our partners will work with you to find a convenient installation time and help you with the set up of the unit and its associated app.

Mercedes-Benz Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) for home charging

As standard, our fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars are supplied with:

  • A 5m length Mode 3 charging cable (8m for GLE, S-Class and EQV models) for wallbox and public charging station usage.
  • Our plug-in hybrid vehicles also come with a 5m length Mode 2 cable for domestic sockets.

Please note that if you are planning to charge your Mercedes-Benz plug-in electric vehicle using a 3-pin domestic plug socket you must get a qualified electrician to inspect and sign off the socket to confirm it is safe and suitable to charge your vehicle. Do not use an electric vehicle 3-pin charge cable with an extension cord.

Additional Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), including the Mercedes-Benz flexible charging system and EV charging cables are available to purchase. These enable mobile charging solutions to support you at home, on the road, or abroad.

To discover what is compatible with your vehicle, visit the accessories configurator or speak to the team.

Ohme
Ohme has three security settings designed to provide you with peace of mind during every charging session. ‘Approve each plugin,’ gives you control over who can access your charger. ‘Lock charger buttons’ safeguards your charging session against unauthorised tampering by preventing anyone from altering the settings or interrupting the session once you’ve plugged in. ‘Sleep when inactive’ ensures energy efficiency and privacy by automatically turning off the display and indicator lights after plug-in, reducing unnecessary power consumption and drawing less attention to your charger.

Pod
The Solo 3S has a remote locking function that is available via the Pod app. If your chargepoint will be out of range of the home Wi-Fi, then we recommend purchasing a physical Solo 3S key lock. When locked, this blocks the flow of electricity and prevents unauthorised use of the chargepoint.

You can charge one vehicle at a time.

Each of our partnered suppliers will work with you to complete a home survey which will determine if a home charger is suitable at your home.

This will depend on the size of the battery in your vehicle and the home charger that you select. Most customers opt for a 7kw charger which can charge an EQA from 0-100% between 10hrs-10hrs 45mins*.  We recommend charging your car to 80% charge to prolong it’s battery life.

*When looking to achieve the industry comparable range figure shown, a charge of 100% is required, however when maximum range isn’t required, charging to 80% is recommended to maximise the life of the battery. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. Figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the starting charge of the battery, factory-fitted options, accessories fitted (post registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. Further information about the test used to establish range, power consumption and CO₂ figures can be found at http://www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/WLTP.

This will depend on your energy tariff. Both Pod and Ohme offer access to some great Electric Vehicle energy tariffs that offer some fantastic charging rates per k/W.

Yes, charging with PV/solar power is possible. Please note that solar charging is subject to fluctuations in the output of the PV/solar system and the additional energy demand of other devices in the house.

If the charging power repeatedly falls below the minimum charging power, a charging stop may be initiated due to a safety function of the vehicle, until the charging process is restarted (reconnect the charging cable).

For a reliable charging process, you should select the "uninterrupted charging with grid support/minimum charging power" function on your wallbox or home energy management system.

This function ensures safe charging even with low PV output, with at least 1.4 kW (single-phase) or 4.2 kW (three-phase) through grid support.
