Mercedes me Charge: contributing to the energy transition with Green Charging

To promote the use of electricity from renewable energies, Mercedes-Benz uses guarantees of origin to ‘green’ the electric and plug-in hybrid cars charging process. By doing this, Mercedes-Benz are ensuring that the equivalent amount of electricity from renewable resources are fed into the grid to compensate the charging of your Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle.

The way Green Charging works is relatively simple: for a certain period of time, the exact amount of electricity charged via Mercedes me Charge is analysed. Subsequently, the defined quantity is offset with high-quality green electricity certificates of origin.

A certificate of origin thus verifiably certifies the origin of energy and serves as a kind of birth certificate for electricity from renewable energy sources. In order to additionally enable an environmental benefit, the certificates of origin fulfil further additional characteristics, which are stipulated in the form of a green electricity label and are geared towards an increased expansion of renewable energy plants.

Green Charging

Green Charging with MB.CHARGE Public.

As part of MB.CHARGE Public, Mercedes-Benz guarantees Green Charging in Europe, Canada, the USA and Japan for charging at public charging points. Here, however, it is the case that not every charging point operator uses 100% energy from renewable resources. That's why Mercedes-Benz uses energy attribute certificates to balance our customers' charging processes. The energy attribute certificates ensure that an equivalent amount of electricity from renewable energies is fed into the power grid.

When Mercedes-Benz uses energy attribute certificates, Mercedes-Benz do so from certified energy generation plants, i.e. exclusively wind and solar power plants that are less than six years old. Where possible, the energy attribute certificates are generated and cancelled in the same country where the charging process takes place.

MB.CHARGE Public enables cross-border charging within Europe and North America. Customers in Europe always pay the local price, depending on the respective charging speed. Accordingly, this price may differ from the conditions in the respective home country. A foreign customer charges in transit at the same conditions as a local user. No additional contract is required for travel to other European countries. When crossing the border, the tariff-dependent country-specific roaming prices apply.

In the case of Green Charging, green electricity certificates are used to ensure that an equivalent amount of electricity from renewable energies is fed into the power grid for charging processes at public charging points via MB.CHARGE Public for private customers, provided that electricity from renewable energies is not yet available. This is certified green electricity (EKOEnergy in Europe, Green-e in North America), which is generated exclusively from wind and solar power plants that are less than six years old. Wherever possible, Mercedes-Benz ensures that generation is carried out in the same country in which the customer charges. In this way, green charging contributes to the further expansion of renewable energies.

Plug & Charge is a technology that allows charging sessions at public charging stations to be started simply by connecting the charging cable. This eliminates the need to use a charging card, authentication via the app or in the vehicle's head unit.

To activate MB.CHARGE Public, firstly, a charging contract with the third-party provider must be concluded. Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs will initially be available in North America, Europe and China – followed by other main markets such as Japan.

Mercedes-Benz plans to set up over 2,000 of its own charging hubs in North America, Europe, China and overseas by the end of the decade. In total, these will then comprise more than 10,000 charging points which can also be expanded depending on market needs.

Depending on the region and location, Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs typically offer between six to 12 high-power charging points. The hubs feature "true high-power-charging" - which means we can provide up to 400 kW of charging power, depending on the region. Intelligent charge capacity management ensures that, as far as possible, each vehicle can be supplied with the maximum capacity it is capable of handling.

For Mercedes Benz, the customer experience is paramount. That is why Mercedes-Benz places particular emphasis on a corresponding "elevated experience" when selecting locations. This means that there are attractive amenities in the immediate vicinity where our customers like to spend their time. This includes the possibility of refreshments, snacks, toilets and places to stay. The characteristic brand appearance gives the charging hub an additional recognition factor, and a "coming home" feeling for Mercedes-Benz drivers. Where possible, Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs will have roofed charging points equipped with photovoltaic modules. Mercedes-Benz also makes no compromises when it comes to quality, and - together with our partners - places the highest value on the functionality, quality and uptime of the hubs - "it just works". The plan is that customers of all brands will be able to use "Plug & Charge" as functionality. Furthermore, the Mercedes-Benz Charging Hubs offer a reservation function for charging points exclusively for MB.CHARGE Public customers. Also, thanks to our Electric Intelligence functionality in our navigation system, you will be directly routed to the most convenient and available charging hub along your route automatically. This ensures maximum efficiency and minimum re-charging time for MB.CHARGE Public Customers: Automated navigation planning, pre-reservation for guaranteed charge slot availability, maximum charging speed, up to 400 kW (depending on region), Plug & Charge.
