COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 Motor Insurance FAQs.

I’ve volunteered to help others with shopping and picking up prescriptions, does my current policy cover me?

If you’re an NHS Volunteer Responder or are volunteering to help your community during the coronavirus outbreak, you don’t need to contact us to update your documents or extend your cover.

If you’re using your own car for voluntary purposes to transport medicines or groceries to support others who are impacted by the coronavirus, then your cover is not affected. This applies to all categories of NHS Volunteer Responders, including the transportation of patients, equipment, or other essential supplies.

Is my car insurance still valid if I drive to work now instead of getting public transport?

Your policy is valid in these circumstances and you don’t need to contact us to update your documents or extend your cover. If you’re a critical worker (as listed here) and need to use your own car to drive to different locations for work purposes, your cover is not affected.

If I have to self-isolate, can I pause my car insurance?

If your car is parked or used on a public road, it’s a legal requirement to have insurance. You could consider taking and keeping your vehicle off road (it must be in a garage, on a drive or on private land) and making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) to tell the DVLA you’ve done this. Click here for more information about how to do this.

Even if you’re not driving your car, you might want to keep your car insured to cover against theft or vandalism. Please note that if you’re a Mercedes-Benz Finance customer, you need to keep your vehicle insured at all times.

Will my car be repaired or replaced if I have an accident?

It may take us a little longer than usual to help in these challenging times, but we’re still here when you need us most.

What if I need to make a claim?

If you need to report an incident please call us on 0344 4933 231 (we’re available 24/7).

I have money worries and I'm struggling to pay my monthly insurance premium

We know this is a worrying and difficult time for many of our customers. If you have concerns, please call Premium Credit on 0344 7369 836 and they can discuss the best option for you.

Am I still insured to drive if my car's MOT has expired? (For MOT expiry dates from 30 March 2020 onwards)

A 6 month exemption from MOT testing has been granted for vehicle owners. This will enable you to continue to drive to work (where you can’t work from home), or shop for necessities. All cars, vans and motorcycles whose MOT expiry date is 30 March 2020 or later will be exempt from a test for 6 months. If you have a valid insurance certificate, you'll still be insured to drive your car during the 6 month exemption, and we won't decline any claims for failure to have an MOT. You must keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition as you can still be prosecuted if it’s unsafe to drive.

How can I renew or discuss my Motor Insurance policy?

If you have automatic renewal in place by direct debit – and the cover still meets your needs, then you don't need to do anything. We'll send or email your renewal documents once your policy has renewed. If you don't have automatic renewal, you'll need to call us on 03450 40 20 90. It could take a little longer than normal to get through to us as we’re experiencing higher call volumes than usual.
