Theft Relevant Parts (TRP)
The heightened safety features make Mercedes-Benz vehicles extremely difficult to steal. The company’s TRP represent a huge step forward in the battle against car crime. When joining TradePartner, a dedicated team of professionals will be on hand to provide TRP technical support at all times.
- What are Theft Relevant Parts?
What are Theft Relevant Parts?
A Theft Relevant Part can be used to change the identity of
a vehicle or to steal a vehicle. Keys are an obvious example
but there are various control units that help to create the
security systems within our cars. To guarantee TRP security
and integrity for all parts, we have a specific, secure user ID
mechanism where only authorised individuals can programme
the parts. Likewise, Mercedes-Benz control the whereabouts
and traceability of the equipment and parts to mitigate any
breaches of security and abuse of the process.
- How long has the TRP supply restriction been operating?
How long has the TRP supply restriction been operating?
The restrictions have been around for approximately ten years
so it’s a well established, proven process. The introduction
of Euro 5 and 6 emissions cars necessitated a few small
changes but predominantly the process and restriction of
certain TRPs to independent workshops remains unchanged
for the past decade.
- What’s the main aim of the TRP process?
What’s the main aim of the TRP process?
To protect are a customers from theft. Mercedes-Benz
is committed to making it as dfficult as possible for
unauthorised people to change the identity of their cars.
- What are the restrictions on TRP?
What are the restrictions on TRP?
There are a small number of TRPs that Mercedes-Benz
cannot supply to independent workshops. These are
predominantly for cars that are pre-Euro 5. These include
items such as keys, ignition locks and gearbox control units
etc. We do supply some parts, i.e. body panels (that have
chassis numbers stamped into them) and software.
Mercedes-Benz is a brand that thieves aspire to steal, they
are valuable cars and in high demand, so if they can get one
component from one Retailer and another part from another,
multiple control units could enable the unauthorised change
of a car’s identity, which makes the car easier to steal.
Thatcham has reviewed the Mercedes-Benz TRP process
and reported it is one of the most robust processes in the
industry. Likewise the RMI is happy to explain the process to
independent workshops if approached.
- Is the TRP process fair?
Is the TRP process fair?
The process is not to take business away from our Trade
partners nor to restrict supply or cause grief to independents.
Our Retailers will work with our trade partners to ensure
the express availability of restricted TRPs. Trade customers
should work in cooperation with Retailers to provide
customers with a choice of where they want parts supplied
and/or fitted. To avoid delays for customers, it is suggested
that trade partners contact their Retailer to identify which
parts they can and can’t purchase. - Is there a published list of Theft Relevant Parts?
Is there a published list of Theft Relevant Parts?
No, based on the evolving range of approximately
1,500 TRPs, however groupings of these components
are available to Retailers. With two TRP specialists at
eachRetailer, Trade partners can be assured of
support/advice when needed.
